Meet Carmel Allamby the steady hand helping keep Austasia running smoothly
At Austasia Animal Products, Carmel is one of those essential people.
Agriculture is often associated with the people working directly with livestock, developing nutritional programs, visiting properties or supporting producers in the field. However, behind every successful agricultural business is a dedicated team keeping its systems and daily operations moving.
Working primarily in accounts payable, Carmel’s days are filled with data entry, processing invoices, reconciling accounts and ensuring everything is completed accurately and on time. It may be a role that largely happens behind the scenes, but it is critical to keeping the business running smoothly.
“There’s a lot more to accounts payable than simply entering invoices,” Carmel explains. “You need to make sure the information is correct, the accounts reconcile and everything is processed properly. It requires plenty of concentration and accuracy.”

A role built on accuracy and trust
In a busy agricultural business, accounts payable connects with many areas, including suppliers, purchasing, stock, transport and everyday operations. Keeping records accurate and current allows the broader team to work with confidence. Carmel takes pride in ensuring invoices are processed efficiently and the accounts remain organised.
“My role is focused on making sure everything is entered accurately and processed on time,” she says. “Keeping the day-to-day accounts up to date helps everything continue to run smoothly.”
While her work may not always be visible to customers or producers, it provides an important foundation for the team members working directly across the animal nutrition industry. For Carmel, there is genuine satisfaction in knowing her careful work supports the wider business.
“I enjoy knowing that the work I do behind the scenes helps keep things running smoothly,” she says. “Everyone understands that their role contributes to the bigger picture.”

Farm roots and a natural connection to agriculture
Carmel’s connection to agriculture began long before she joined Austasia.
Raised on a farm, she grew up understanding the hard work involved in caring for livestock, producing food and looking after the land. Agriculture was part of everyday life, creating an appreciation that has stayed with her throughout her career. Her entry into the animal nutrition industry was refreshingly simple: she saw an advertised position and decided to apply.
“Having grown up on a farm, agriculture has always been familiar to me,” Carmel says. “It felt like a natural industry to become part of.”
Some of her favourite agricultural memories come from helping during sowing time.
“I remember helping to tip the super and grain into the combine,” she recalls. “They’re simple memories, but they’ve stayed with me and remind me of my early connection to farming.”
Although Carmel now contributes from an office rather than the paddock, those early experiences continue to shape her approach to work. Reliability, attention to detail and a willingness to play her part remain important values.

Appreciating the people behind agriculture
One of the things Carmel enjoys most about agriculture is its genuine, practical and down-to-earth people.
“People in agriculture are generally straightforward, friendly and easy to deal with,” she says. “Having grown up on a farm, I understand that agriculture is built around hardworking people and strong relationships.”
While some members of the Austasia team regularly visit properties and attend industry events, Carmel’s role is firmly office-based.
“I’m generally at my desk from 8.30am to 5pm each day,” she says. “My connection to agriculture comes more from growing up on a farm than travelling for work.”
Carmel enjoys the consistency and structure of her Monday-to-Friday routine, which provides a healthy balance between work and home life. The methodical nature of her role suits her, with accuracy and organisation forming an important part of every day.

Working together at Austasia
Carmel believes Austasia’s team culture is shaped by its people and their willingness to support one another. While everyone has their own responsibilities, there is a shared understanding that each role contributes to the company’s broader purpose. Team members are trusted to work independently but are also ready to help when needed.
“I think it’s the people and the down-to-earth way everyone works together that makes the team different,” Carmel says. “There’s a willingness to help each other out, and everyone understands that their role contributes to the bigger picture.”
Although Carmel is removed from the technical side of animal nutrition, she appreciates the importance of agriculture to Australia and respects the people working hard to move the industry forward. Her contribution helps provide the dependable foundation needed for Austasia’s broader team to support producers and customers.
Family comes first
When the working day ends, Carmel’s priorities turn firmly towards family particularly her grandbabies.
“I’m most likely to be checking in to see what sort of day they’ve had,” she says. “I love hearing about what they’ve been doing and spending time with them whenever I can. They definitely keep me busy and put a smile on my face.”
Practical, dependable and quietly committed, Carmel is an important part of the Austasia team. Her story is a reminder that every successful agricultural business relies on dedicated people both in the field and behind the scenes.
